The Milky Way: A River of Stars is an expository text that explains Earth’s place in space and describes the Milky Way.  The text also covers the role of telescopes and mathematics in the study of the Milky Way. An activity invites students to create a spiral galaxy. 

The book is divided into sections with some subsections.  Sentences vary in length and structure.  Labeled and captioned drawings, photographs, diagrams, and a timeline support and extend the text. Fact boxes add interest. The book has a table of contents, glossary, and index.
