Science Readers: Asteroids and Comets

Asteroids and Comets is an expository nonfiction text that explains asteroids, meteorites, and comets. The back of the book includes a paragraph on one of today’s scientists. Readers gain information from text and graphics. A two-page experiment written in third-person procedural language invites students to watch the moon for one week, draw what it seen, and look at all of the drawings after one week. 

Asteroids and Comets is divided into sections. Illustrations, such as photos and diagrams, enhance the readers understanding of the information. Fact boxes appear throughout the text to provide students with additional learning opportunities. Periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation marks are used. A table of contents, glossary, and an index support the reader.

Simple plurals using ­–s, and verbs with the –s inflectional ending are used in the text. Some sentences contain adjectives and adverbs. Glossary words are bold faced throughout the text.
