Grandad’s Rock is a realistic story about family history and support.  Eddie’s grandmother is “drifting,” and she sometimes calls him by his late grandfather’s name.  When Eddie and his grandmother go to a rock once loved by his grandad, Eddie comes to understand the importance of the land and his role in supporting his grandmotherThe story is told in narrative and dialogue.

The story follows the pattern of a problem-solution narrative.  A variety of sentence types are used.  Illustrations support the text, although not all events are illustrated.  One flashback illustration is used.  Large type in an interesting font is used to add drama.  Apostrophes are used to show the possessive and in contractions. The book concludes with a two-page spread that gives the characteristics of a narrative, including information about who the story is about, when and where it takes place, and the problem and solution.

Some words, such as drifting, hay bailer, stile, and beliefs may require clarification.  The adjectives strange, loose, and scraggly are used. The pronouns his, her, they, she, it, and you are used.  The adverbs slowly, quickly, and limply are used.
