The Secrets of Sand

The Secrets of Sand is an informational report.  The text describes sand, the creatures that live in sandy environments, the challenges sand poses to living things, and some sand survival tips.  It also looks at how sand can be both useful and harmful and how important it is to keep our sandy shores free from garbage and other types of pollution.  The style is informative and conversational.

The book has a table of contents and is divided into nine sections, an introduction and eight sections supporting the main idea.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence types.  Captioned and labelled photographs and illustrations and a sequence illustration support the text and add meaning.  An index is provided.  The book concludes with a two-page spread that provides the characteristics of a report, including a topic, headings, supporting information, and visuals.

Some words, such as minerals, sandstone, environment, and survive may require clarification.  The adjectives small, little, and hot are used.  The pronouns they, their, its, it, and themselves are used.
