The Glass Boy is a historical fiction tale presented in twelve chapters.  Pietro is a lowly helper to a Glass Master in Murano, Venice, but he has secretly been learning the techniques of the art.  When the drunken master enters into a bet that puts his – and Pietro’s – future at stake, can Pietro save the day?  The book concludes with a feature on planning and writing historical fiction.

The text is composed of dialogue and a variety of sentence types.  Dramatic illustrations provide a context and create mood.  Inset boxes encourage readers to notice visual features and aspects of plot, character, and setting, to activate reading strategies, and to clarify vocabulary.  Boxes also highlight issues and prompt personal response.

The narrative is rich in descriptive and figurative language, as well as terminology related to the setting.
