Circus Boy

Circus Boy is a narrative about Joe, a lowly popcorn seller because unlike the rest of his family – a famous high wire act – Joe is afraid of heights.  But just when it seems Joe will never realize his dream of performing in the big ring, Joe and his pet mouse, Dorothy, save the day by deftly subduing the raging elephant, Freddy!  A new act is born.  The story is told in dialogue and narrative.

The story has a problem solution structure.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence types.  Illustrations support the text but not all events are shown.  Boldface and ellipses are used.  The book concludes with a two-page spread that tells how to write a narrative.

Some words may require clarification: sympathy, stunts, shimmied, lowliest, literally, erupted, death-defying.  Simile: like a sheep dog.  Alliteration: Flaming Fandango, Rocketing Rodney, Lola Loop-de-Loop, Leaping Liz.
