Shark Scare
Shark Scare! is a realistic adventure presented as a first-person recount. A young snorkeller on vacation is determined to snap a photo of a “Grandaddy Snapper” before his holiday is over. He dismisses talk at the beach of a recent shark scare, but underwater his imagination almost gets the best of him. He keeps up a running dialogue with himself and finds the courage to stay underwater and get that shot. Descriptive language and suspense give the story excitement.
The recount relates the adventure as a sequence of events. A variety of sentence types are used. Dramatic illustrations support the text and add meaning. Key moments in the story are accentuated by orange type in an interesting font. The book concludes with a two-page spread that gives the characteristics of a recount, including information about who the story is about, when and where it takes place, what happens, and how the story ends.
Some words, such as arch, gaze, nervous, gloomy, and mau mau may require clarification. The adjectives giant, friendly, dark, and huge appear. The pronouns I, me, my, and it appear. A simile is used.
