Fish for Dinner

Fish for Dinner is a humorous, realistic story about a mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa who each catch a fish for dinner.  While the foursome swims, the seagulls go fishing and steal their own dinner from the dock.  Several repeating language patterns tell the story in dialogue and simple narrative.

All the sentences are short and predictable.  Humorous illustrations match the text directly and add meaning .  A labelled inset illustration highlights each fish caught.  The characters’ names are capitalized, as in Dad.  Quotation marks are used in dialogue.  Exclamation marks and bold face are used for emphasis.  The book concludes with a graphic organizer matching each fisher to his or her fish.

The high frequency words are she and they.  Interest words include seagulls and swimming.  Compound words are seagulls, Grandma, and Grandpa.
