Fiction Readers: The Princess and the Pea
The Princess and the Pea is a fractured fairytale based on a traditional tale about a prince trying to find a princess. One day, a woman shows up drenched in water claiming to be a princess. She stays the night, but the queen tests her to make sure she is a real princess! The story is narrated with dialogue, illustrations and illustrative text.
The Princess and the Pea is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the layout and design of the story as well as the illustrative text (italics).
Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (notice) and adjectives (fierce). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes within contractions (we’ll), capital letters at the beginning of sentences, question marks, quotation marks, exclamation marks, and commas. Focus on suffix es (princesses).
