In a Whirl is a realistic fiction story about a girl, Scarlett, dreaming of how she wants to work with animals when she grows up. She spins a globe and imagines working with animals in different parts of the world. She looks up some of the places her finger lands on using the computer and realizes how some animals are endangered. The story is narrated from Scarlett’s perspective with dialogue, illustrations, labels, and maps.

In A Whirl is a simple narrative story.  Illustrations and maps support the text directly.  Capital letters appear at the beginning of sentences and for names (Mars).  Question marks, exclamation marks, commas, quotation marks, and brackets are used.
