Fiction Readers: Ready, Set, Go!

Ready, Set, Go! is a humorous and fictional animal fantasy story about different sea creatures ready for a race. Starfish sees a weird looking creature that claims he is a Dogfish. The Dogfish does not do well swimming, but catches up and passes everyone on land! In the end, everyone realizes that Dogfish was actually a dog! The story is narrated with illustrations, signs, and illustrative text. 

Ready, Set, Go! is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the layout and design of the story as well as the illustrative text within signs. Opportunities arise to discuss the different types of signs one might see during a race. 

Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (tricked) and adjectives (slowly). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes within contractions (don’t), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Starfish), quotation marks, exclamation marks, and commas. Focus on long and short vowel e and suffix es (chases)
