Fiction Readers: Lizzie's Dream
Lizzie’s Dream is a realistic fiction story about a girl, Lizzie, who dreamed about becoming a pilot one day. She researched the world, tried to solve flight path problems, designed paper airplanes, and read all about flight. Then, in science, her teacher showed them a model rocket…it was time to learn all about rockets! The story is narrated from Lizzie’s perspective with illustrations, illustrative text, and thought bubbles.
Lizzie’s Dream is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the thought bubbles, illustrative text (italics), layout and design. Opportunities arise to discuss illustrations and text as thoughts and dreams.
Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (stows) and adjectives (famous). Focus on suffixes and base words (talking) as well as abbreviations (Ms.). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes within contractions (it’s), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Ms. Hale), exclamation marks, question marks, and commas.
