Fiction Readers: Speak Up!
Speak Up! are a series of traditional poems from different time periods and places. Some of the poems include: The Beehive, Little Chicken, Mousie Brown, and Oliver Twist. The poems include illustrations, listed authorships, origin locations, and dates.
Speak Up! is designed as a series of eight poems. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the table of contents, authorships, dates, and origin locations as well as the layout and design of poems. There is also a Sources and Acknowledgements page. Opportunities arise to discuss the purpose and structure of a poem and the rhythm and rhyme while reading a poem.
Readers develop vocabulary such as adjectives (little), verbs (touch), and rhyming words (wall/all). Focus on suffixes and base words (pecking). Opportunities arise to discuss capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Oliver Twist), exclamation marks, and commas.
