Fiction Readers: Boris and Bea
Boris and Bea is a humorous and realistic fiction story about Bea and her dog Boris. They would do everything together, but one day she noticed something wrong with Boris. The vet did not find anything wrong, but Bea decides to let Boris be a therapy dog again. Boris was happy again to be around all of the children! The story is narrated with dialogue, illustrations, and thought bubble.
Boris and Bea is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the thought bubble, layout, and design. Opportunities arise to discuss with students the multiple illustrations on one page and why the illustrator decided to create this montage.
Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (listened) and adjectives (healthy). Focus on suffixes and base words (worried). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes within contractions (doesn’t), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Aunt Kay), question marks, quotation marks, exclamation marks, and commas.
