Ela and the Dog Choice is a recount by Ela, who describes her middle-child life in amusing detail.  Ela finally gets her dream birthday present – a puppy, but the pup goes missing on his first night.  The family becomes a search party while Ela stops to think.  And she guesses where to look. The style is friendly and conversational.

The text is composed of a variety of sentence types.  Illustrations support the text but not all events are illustrated.  Bold face and ellipses are used to create drama.  The book concludes with a two-page spread that tells how to write a recount.
