Captain Quake and Boss Bird

Captain Quake and Boss Bird is a humorous story about a captain and his bird and the three sailors they keep busy.  The sailors think Captain Quake is “mean as a rattlesnake,” but when Boss Bird gets sick, they discover “deep inside, he’s a soft marshmallow!”  Several repeating language patterns tell the story in dialogue and narrative.

The story is told as a sequence of events.  A variety of sentence types are used.   Quotation marks, exclamation marks, question marks, ellipses, apostrophes, and commas are used. Bold face is used for emphasis.  Colourful display type is used in text and illustrations to enhance meaning.  Humorous illustrations support the text directly and add meaning.

The contractions didn’t, won’t, he’s, and where’s are used.  Singular/plural pairs include broom/brooms and foot/feet.  The homonyms sails/sales and not/knot appear.  Interest words include scuttle, scurry, slacking, shirking, bellowed, mumbled, and grumbled.
