Drummer Boy is a realistic story about a Secwepemc boy who goes to a new school and gains the respect of the school bully when the two boys compete in the talent show.  The story is told in a graphic format.  The book concludes with Teachings from Turtle Island and Turtle Island Circle, features that provide additional information and prompt reflection and extension.

The book has a Contents and is divided into chapters.  All the sentences are short and simple.  Narrative captions, speech and thought bubbles, and illustrations tell the story.

The vocabulary reflects the everyday speech of children.
