Deer and Cougar is a traditional Nuu-chah-nulth tale relating how Deer saves her life by using quick thinking and problem-solving skills to outwit Cougar.  The story is told in dialogue and narrative.  The book concludes with information about the Nuu-chah-nulth, a group of First Nations from the Northwest Coast of Canada. 

The book is divided into chapters and has a Contents.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence typesUppercase letters create the proper names Deer, Cougar, and Creator.  Italic is used to show interior thought.  Illustrations support the text but not all scenes are illustrated.  Turtle Island Circle provides extension activities.

Some words may require clarification, such as totem, snickered, and wit.
