Travelling Animals

Travelling Animals is an expository nonfiction text that explains how some animals move from one place to another to find food or water, have babies or lay eggs, or find a warm place. Readers gain information from the text, map, key, captions, labels, fact boxes, and life cycle diagram.

Travelling Animals is split into seven sections to outline why different animals travel. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Photographs match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the photographs, illustrations, labels, map, diagrams, Index, layout, and design. There is a chart at the end of the book that provides a visual summary of the different travelling animals with photographs and labels. An activity on creating a categorical chart is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.

Readers develop vocabulary such singular/plural (egg/eggs) and homonyms (their/there). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (parents’) and apostrophes within contractions (don’t). Focus on long and short vowel e and look at suffixes and base words (warmer).
