Thrills on Water
Thrills on Water is an expository nonfiction text that explains a variety of trilling but dangerous water sports like white-water rafting and surfing. The text discusses how these sports differ from one another and how the variety of sports equipment are used. Readers gain information from the text, graph, captions, and labels.
Thrills on Water is split into seven sections to outline the different characteristics of each water sport. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Photographs match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the photographs, illustrations, graph, Index, layout, and design. There is a photographic web at the end of the book that provides a visual summary of the different water sports with labels. An activity on making a comparison chart is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.
Readers develop vocabulary such singular/plural (wave/waves) and homonyms (tow/toe). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (fish’s) and apostrophes within contractions (can’t). Focus on long and short vowel i and look at suffixes and base words (thrilling).
