Spencer and Charlie
Spencer and Charlie is a narrative about a tall boy, Spencer, and his tiny, squeaky dog Charlie. Spencer doesn’t like it when people laugh at Charlie, and after Charlie saves a fisherman’s life, no one does! The story is told in dialogue and narrative.
The story has a problem solution structure. The text is composed of a variety of sentence types. Illustrations support the text but not all events are shown. Speech balloons appear in art. Dashes and ellipses are used to create drama. A newspaper article recounts Charlie’s heroic rescue. The book concludes with a two-page spread that tells how to write a narrative.
Some words may require clarification: sniggered, mite-sized intruder, full flight, tousled, anxiety, apprehensively, frantically. Metaphor: he was a sparky little sprout.
