Charlie

Charlie is a humorous, realistic story about a class pet bird.  The teacher does not like birds, but she likes Charlie even less when he starts saying “Give me a kiss.”  The story is told in dialogue and simple narrative.

All the sentences are short and predictable.  Humorous illustrations match the text directly and add meaning.  A sign advertises that a bird has been found.  Characters’ names are capitalized.  Quotation marks are used in dialogue.  Exclamation marks are used for emphasis. 

Interest words include beady, guinea pig, whistling, and principal.  The compound words classroom, anything, and someone are used.
