Sails: The Egg Saga
The Egg Saga is a humorous fiction story recounting the time when Jim and his friend Charlie found an enormous egg on an island. The egg turned out to be extremely rare and valuable. Instead of selling the egg or hiding it, they donated it to the museum and received an award. The story is narrated based on Jim’s recounts and includes some text highlights and speech bubbles (when the parrot talks).
The Egg Saga is a simple narrative story following a recount structure to tell about something that has happened. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Illustrations match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the text highlights, certificate layout, speech bubbles, graphics, font, layout, and design of comic strips. There is an infographic at the end of the book outlining the different components of writing and sequencing a recount story. An activity on designing their own visual map of a recount is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.
Readers develop vocabulary such as nouns (museum), verbs (bury), and singular/plural (wall/walls). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (elephant bird’s egg) and apostrophes within contractions (couldn’t). Focus on long and short vowel a, base words (heavier), and the prefix up (upset). Discuss silent letters (wrong).
