Marvelous Menus

Marvellous Menus is animal fantasy with a series of fictional menus for a variety of restaurants run by different animals. Some of the restaurant menus include: Rodents’ Restaurant, Cats’ Café, Dinosaurs’ Dial-A-Meal, and Tiger Takeaways. The story includes text features like menus and signs.

Marvellous Menus is designed to be a series of seven menus in an animal community. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Illustrations match the text by visually showing animals eating at the restaurants. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the graphics, style, font, dollar ($) signs, and restaurant signs as well as the information, layout, and design of the menus. There is an infographic at the end of the story outlining the purpose and procedures for designing a food menu. An activity on designing a menu is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.

Readers develop vocabulary such as nouns (meals), verbs (bake), and singular/plural (drink/drinks). Opportunities arise to discuss parentheses and apostrophes to show possession (Cats’ Café). Focus on short and long vowel i, the suffix y (crispy), and base words (sizzling).
