Kids in the Kitchen
Kids in the Kitchen is a humorous, realistic story about a dad making pizza. On each page, Dad tells what he is doing using the sentence stem “I am _________” and repeats the direction “No kids in the kitchen!” Mum discovers a mess in the kitchen, and Dad explains by saying “Kids in the kitchen!” The story is told in dialogue.
All of the sentences are simple and mostly predictable. Dad and Mum are characters with capitalized names. Humorous illustrations match the text directly and add meaning. A labelled inset illustration on each two-page spread highlights the ingredient Dad is adding on that page. Quotation marks are used in dialogue. Bold face is used for emphasis. The last past offers a recipe for making pizza.
The high frequency words are I, am, in, and the. Interest words include pizza, onions, and recipe. The -ing inflection is used to describe steps, as in making, cutting, cooking.
