Granny Comes to Stay

Granny Comes to Stay is a humorous, realistic story about a visit from Granny, who arrives with a truckload of baggage.  As the kids help her unload, they find that Granny’s things alone take up a whole room.  Granny has a solution.  She will sleep outside in a text, and the kids decide to join her.  The story is told in dialogue and simple narrative that is close to oral language.

All of the sentences are short and similar in structure.  Illustrations match the text directly and add information.  Icon illustrations of key words, such as plants, fish, and mice are embedded in the text.  Granny is a character with a capitalized name.  Quotation marks are used in dialogue.  Bold face, enlarged type, and exclamation marks are used for emphasis.  The book concludes with a labelled illustration of all Granny’s things.
