Fiction Readers: The Treasure Hunt
The Treasure Hunt is a realistic fiction story about a girl, Opal, who was opening her birthday gifts. One of her gifts was a map of a science museum with a clue! Opal and her family went to the museum where she saw her friends. The clues led them around the museum until they finally ended up at Opal’s birthday party! The story is narrated with dialogue, illustrations, illustrative text, a map, and clues.
The Treasure Hunt is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the illustrative text, map, layout and design of the story. Opportunities arise to discuss the structure of the clues and layout of the map.
Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (squeal) and adjectives (shiny). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (Opal’s), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Bird Life Hall), quotation marks, exclamation marks, and commas.
