The Hare and the Tortoise is an Aesop Fable that has been retold by another author. The story is about a hare teasing a tortoise for being slow. They end up racing, but hare decided to take a nap in the middle of the race. Tortoise is slow and steady and wins the race! The story does not stop there…it includes the hare’s version of the story! The story is narrated with illustrations, illustrative text, signs, labels, and route map.

The Hare and the Tortoise is a simple narrative story designed as two sections for students to see the difference between both perspectives. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the illustrative text, labels, route map, signs, layout, and design. Opportunities arise to practice critical thinking by students understanding the perspectives of both characters.

Readers develop vocabulary such as singular/plural (bush/bushes). Focus on suffixes and base words (running). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (Hare’s Track), apostrophes within contractions (I’m), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Tortoise Race Committee), exclamation marks, question marks, and commas.
