Fiction Readers: Soo Yun's Book
Soo Yun’s Book is a realistic fiction story about a class that made a book for their Korean exchange student, Soo Yun. Soo Yun’s friends recount the fun times they shared with Soo Yun. Each student in the class talks about funny things that happened, how they became friends, and the activities they did together. The story is narrated through letters with illustrations, labels, and symbols.
Soo Yun’s Book is a simple narrative story written as a series of letters for Soo Yun before she returns home to Korea. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the illustrative text when students sign their names, layout, and design. The letters throughout the story provide an opportunity to discuss the structure, content, and procedure for writing a letter.
Readers develop vocabulary such as singular/plural (friend/friends). Focus on suffixes and base words (wonderful). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (Soo Yun’s), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Michael), exclamation marks, commas, and brackets.
