Fiction Readers: Planet Puzzle

Planet Puzzle is a humorous fiction story about a family that lives on another planet. While on their way to Saturn for a picnic, Papa plays a game with them. They learn all about Earth, earthlings, and gravity. The parents surprise everyone by announcing that they are going to go to the moon instead and ride on the Lunar Leap! The story is narrated with dialogue, illustrations, and illustrative text.

Planet Puzzle is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the illustrative text (italics), layout, and design. Opportunities arise to discuss the features of planet Earth. 

Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (giggle) and adjectives (clever). Focus on suffixes and base words (wearing). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (Earth’s), apostrophes within contractions (we’re), capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Robo-Pilot), question marks, exclamation marks, and commas.
