Fiction Readers: Maya Monkey

Maya Monkey is a fictional animal fantasy story about a monkey who did not want to play because she thought her tail was too long. She admired the tails of other animals. When she was looking at crocodile’s tail, it snapped at her. She jumped back and swung her way home! Maya then loved her tail! The story is narrated with dialogue, illustrations, illustrative text, and onomatopoeia. 

Maya Monkey is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the layout and design of the story. Discuss the illustrative text to emphasize the sounds of animals. 

Readers develop vocabulary such as high frequency words (looks), verbs (grew), and adjectives (sleek). Opportunities arise to discuss capital letters at the beginning of sentences and names (Maya). Focus on long and short vowel a and suffix ed (loved).
