Life at the Top is a humorous and fictional animal fantasy story about a little girl imagining how the ladybug family in her tree is just like her family. They take pictures just like her dad, lay in the hammock just like her mom and little brother, and watch ants just like her other brother. She makes friends with the little girl ladybug! The story is narrated with magnified illustrations and comparative illustrations.
Life at the Top is a simple narrative story. Illustrations match the text. Draw students’ attention to the visual features including the layout and design of the story. The illustrations are split up to show the ladybug family and the real family to compare them.
Readers develop vocabulary such as verbs (crawling) and adjectives (beautiful). Focus on suffixes and base words (watches). Opportunities arise to discuss capital letters at the beginning of sentences, exclamation marks, and commas.
