Eggs in the Sun is a humorous, realistic story about a trick that Mr. Mack plays on Mrs. Mack. Mr. Mack tells his wife not to leave eggs in the sun because they will hatch but she doesn’t believe him. He buys two baby chicks and puts them in the bowl with cracked eggshells. Mrs. Mack cannot believe her eyes and wants to hatch more eggs so that she can have a chicken farm.

To begin, the characters and setting are introduced. Illustrations add detail, interest, and humour to the text and are found on each page. Callouts prompt prediction and allow students to make inferences. Numbered directions with pictures show how Mr. Mack executed the trick.

There are a few prepositional phrases, indicating time, at the beginning of a sentence. To conclude, a sequence that asks students to decide the proper order of events is shown. In addition, a Word Bank is offered with images to support each word.
