Cold Places
Cold Places is an expository nonfiction text that explains the Arctic and Antarctica by outlining the animals, people, plants, and location of these two cold places. Readers gain information from the text, captions, labels, maps, graph, and photographic sequence.
Cold Places is split into two sections to provide a comparison between the Arctic and Antarctica. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Photographs match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the photographs, illustrations, photographic sequence, graphs, Index, and the layout and design of maps. There are two summary webs at the end of the book providing a comparison between both cold places. An activity on researching one of the animals from the text is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.
Readers develop vocabulary such singular/plural (place/places) and homonyms (two/too/to). Opportunities arise to discuss using apostrophes within contractions (don’t). Focus on long and short vowel o and look at suffixes and base words (boiling).
