Toast with Miss Lily
Toast with Miss Lily is a narrative about a boy, Kip, who is angry at his parents for leaving him with a babysitter, Miss Lily, while they go on a trip. Kip warms to Miss Lily when a power failure prompts some improvising and Miss Lily teaches him how to toast bread over a candle. The story is told in dialogue and narrative.
The story has a problem solution structure. The text is composed of a variety of sentence types. Illustrations support the text but not all events are shown. Boldface and ellipses are used to create drama. The book concludes with a two-page spread that tells how to write a narrative.
Some words may require clarification: aroma, simmered, churned, reluctantly, tentative. Similes: like a watching tiger in the grass, like freezing needles, like an insect using its antennae. Metaphor: fresh anger … churned in his belly.
