The Volcano Awakes

The Volcano Awakes! is a first-person factual recount of a reporter’s experience covering the eruption of Mount St. Helens.  Narrative and dialogue are used to tell the dramatic story.  The style is highly descriptive and includes the use of literary devices, such as personification.  The book concludes with several features dealing with creating a summary, making text to self/text/world, and planning to write a factual recount.

The text is organized chronologically.  Illustrations, captioned photographs, bold display type, maps, and diagrams support the text and add excitement.  Numerous prompts encourage readers to use reading strategies and identify literary devices.  A glossary and index are provided.

Highly descriptive vocabulary is used, and unfamiliar or specialized vocabulary is defined in context.
