The Silent

The Silent is a chilling fantasy.  When Aneesa and Gryph see a parade of silent, robotic people, they are drawn through a “fissure in time and space.”  A curse has silenced the people, including Aneesa.  Gryph is on her own to figure out the curse and lift it.  The book concludes with a feature on planning and writing a fantasy story.

The text is composed of dialogue and a variety of sentence types.  Artistic illustrations provide a context and create mood.  Inset boxes encourage readers to notice visual features and aspects of plot, character, and setting, to activate reading strategies, and to clarify vocabulary.  Boxes also highlight issues and prompt personal response.

The narrative is rich in descriptive and figurative language.
