The Parting

The Parting is a science fiction story told in the first person by Fizz.  Teenagers Benji and Fizz have always lived on a farm with their dads, who are brothers.  They have never met their moms, whom townsfolk call “mystery girls” because no one ever saw them.  When Benji feels a “calling,” the mystery of the moms leads to a discovery and a new future for one of the cousins. The book concludes with a feature on planning and writing a science fiction story.

The text is composed of dialogue and a variety of sentence types.  Artistic illustrations provide a context and create mood.  Inset boxes encourage readers to notice visual features and aspects of plot, character, and setting, to activate reading strategies, and to clarify vocabulary.  Boxes also highlight issues and prompt personal response.

The narrative is rich in descriptive language.
