The Nose Horns
The Nose Horns is an expository nonfiction text that explains the characteristics of rhinoceroses, which include their skin, ears, eyes, and horn. The text discusses how the rhinos use these body parts and how they protect their body. Readers gain information from the text, graph, captions, fact boxes, and labels.
The Nose Horns is split into six sections to outline the different characteristics and behaviours of rhinos. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Photographs match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the photographs, illustrations, graph, Index, layout, and design. There is a body map at the end of the book that provides a visual summary of the location and characteristics of rhino body parts. An activity on making a comparison chart is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.
Readers develop vocabulary such singular/plural (hoof/hooves) and homonyms (break/brake). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (birds’). Focus on long and short vowel e and look at suffixes and base words (flapping).
