The Hiders is an informational report.  The text describes how animals and people choose places of safety and use camouflage to elude predators and enemies.  Wartime hiding tactics by soldiers and those persecuted, such as Anne Frank, are detailed.  The style is informative and conversational.

The book has a table of contents and is divided into four sections, an introduction and three sections supporting the main idea.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence typesCaptioned photographs, illustrations, and cross-section illustrations support the text and add meaning.  A glossary and index are provided.  The book concludes with a two-page spread that provides the characteristics of a report, including a topic, headings, supporting information, and visuals.

Some words, such as camouflage, enemy, predator, territory, and attic may need clarification.  Several words appear in both singular and plural: animal/animals, predator/predators, soldier/soldiers.  The prefixes un-  (unseen) and sub-  (submarine) appear.
