Surfing the Seventh Wave
Surfing the Seventh Wave is a narrative about a teenager’s first, scary ride on a truly big wave. With her dad’s help and encouragement, she conquers her fear – and can’t wait for the next big wave. The story is told in dialogue and narrative.
The story has a problem solution structure. The text is composed of a variety of sentence types. Illustrations support the text but not all events are illustrated. Dashes and ellipses are used. Italic and boldface are used for emphasis. The book concludes with a two-page spread that tells how to write a narrative.
Some words may require clarification: resolutely, thrashing, sandbar, surging, apprehensively, towered, overripe, catapulted, elated. Similes: like a huge sheet of corrugated iron, like an overripe melon, like a hungry giant. Metaphors: frozen with fear, spray hissed around her, a green wall of water, the wave’s giant mouth, sucked into its belly.
