Sports News
Sports News is a collection of newspaper reports, each covering a dramatic event in sport. From skiers caught in an avalanche to a mountain biking duel to a homerun hero, each news story captures the thrill of pushing the limits. Narrative nonfiction, direct quotation, and descriptive language are used to tell the tales. Two features conclude the book, one prompting readers to make text to self/text/world connections and another providing a step-by-step guide to planning a newspaper report.
Each news story appears on a two-page spread with a headline and a single column format. Striking quotations and key facts appear in large type within the running text. One or two illustrations highlight an exciting moment in each story. Boxes prompt readers to reflect on vocabulary and to use questioning and inferring strategies. A variety of sentence types are used. Bold face, dashes, and parentheses are used.
Descriptive and figurative language appear throughout. For example, “neck and neck over rocks, loose gravel, and gnarly paths” and “I was jerked backwards and forwards like clothes in the wash.”
