Splinters

Splinters is a narrative about a boy named Edward who rescues an injured magpie. The magpie becomes like a pet but when a painter offers to buy him, Edward agrees. Edward regrets the decision but one day the magpie returns. The book also discusses text connections, planning a narrative, and features of a narrative.

A variety of sentence types is used.  The story is told in the first-person.  Illustrations support and enhance the text. Text boxes call attention to literary features such as imagery and similes, and prompt the use of comprehension strategies, such as predicting and inferring.

The text uses descriptive language.
