Spitters! is an informational explanation.  The text explains how animals use spit when they are angry, to make things, and to get food.  For example, llamas fire off spit balls when other llamas fail to get the warning signals that they are annoyed.  Birds use spit to attach their nests to the walls and roofs of caves.  The style is informative and conversational.

The book has a table of contents and is divided into four sections, an introduction and three sections supporting the main idea.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence typesApostrophes are used for singular and plural possessives.  Captioned and labelled photographs and diagrams support the text and add meaning. One series of photographs is numbered to show sequence.  An index is provided.  The book concludes with a two-page spread that provides the characteristics of an explanation, including a topic, headings, supporting information, and visuals.

Some words, such as twitch, nectar, and separate may require clarification.  Two words are used in both singular and plural: enemy/enemies, nest/nests.
