Pirates is an exciting informational report about the thieving life on the high seas.  The text looks at pirates’ ships, attacks, and treasure – including treasure maps.  The style is informative and conversational.

The book has a table of contents and is divided into five sections, an introduction and four sections supporting the main idea.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence typesIllustrations and informative sidebars support the text and add meaning.  The apostrophe is used to show the possessive.  Parentheses are used to provide additional information.  An index is provided.  The book concludes with a two-page spread that provides the characteristics of a report, including a topic, headings, supporting information, and visuals.

Some words, such as booty, wages, and raid may require clarification.  The nouns pirate, scarves, sword, and dagger are used.  The verbs steal, clean, and help are used.  The following singular/plural pairs occur: eye/eyes, ship/ships, map/maps.
