Mum’s Shoes is a humorous and realistic fiction story about a son and his Mum going shopping for some new shoes. Mum bought a pair of high heels, but her son was not sure about them. Mum struggled to walk in the shoes out the mall and one eventually snapped…she then had to get creative! The story is narrated by the son with dialogue, speech bubbles, and onomatopoeia.

Mum’s Shoes is a simple narrative story. Critical thinking questions are provided to guide the reader. Illustrations match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the bold and illustrative text as well as the information, layout, and design of advertisements. There is an illustrated advertisement for shoes to use as an exemplar at the end of the book. An activity on designing a new pair of shoes for Mum and creating an advertisement is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.

Readers develop vocabulary such as singular/plural (heel/heels) and homonyms (new/knew). Opportunities arise to discuss apostrophes to show possession (Mum’s) and apostrophes within contractions (can’t). Focus on long and short vowel e and discuss suffixes and base words (shopping).
