Koevasi is a heart-breaking contemporary story told in the first person.  The narrator, Clem, lives with his friend AJ.  Both boys have lost their parents in a war that still fills the streets of their city with danger.  AJ decides to put his trust in a girl named Koevasi and to leave the city.  Clem thinks she’s a rebel.  On this unanswered question, the boys sadly part ways.  The book concludes with a feature on planning and writing a contemporary story.

The text is composed of dialogue and a variety of sentence types.  Hyper-realistic illustrations provide a context and create mood.  Inset boxes encourage readers to notice visual features and aspects of plot, character, and setting, to activate reading strategies, and to clarify vocabulary.  Boxes also highlight issues and prompt personal response.
