Just This Once is a recount by a young girl faced with a moral dilemma.  Will it be okay if “just this once” she does what she knows is wrong?  Her good character guides her to the right answer.  The story is told in dialogue and first-person narrative.

The story has a problem-solution structure.  The text is composed of a variety of sentence typesIllustrations support the text but not all events are illustrated.  Quotation marks, exclamation marks, and dashes are used.  Large, boldface display type is used for emphasis.  The book concludes with a two-page spread explaining the characteristics of a recount.

Some words may require clarification: ages, darted, surely, honest, X-ray vision, exhausting, generous.  Simile: quieter than a whisper.  The suffixes -ly (quickly) and -en (fallen) are used.
