Inside Insects

Inside Insects is an expository nonfiction text that explains the insides of a bee, beetle, butterfly, caterpillar, cricket, and ladybird. Readers gain information from the text, photographs, illustrations, captions and labels.

Inside Insects discusses a series of animals’ insides by showing a photograph and an illustrated diagram with labels for each animal. Diagrams show the inside of the animals. There are critical thinking questions to guide the reader. Photographs match the text. A visual information guide is provided for teachers to draw students’ attention to the photographs and compare them to illustrations. As well, focus is placed on the labels, captions, Index, layout, and design. An activity on drawing and writing about one animal’s insides is provided for teachers to extend students’ learning.

Readers develop vocabulary such as interest words (cricket) high-frequency words (inside), and positional words (in). Opportunities arise to discuss capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops. Focus on blend br (brain) and word family ump (jump).
