Grumpy Bear
Grumpy Bear is a humorous animal fantasy. When the birds and the mice keep Grumpy Bear from sleeping, he scares them off with his teeth and claws, but he can’t frighten the buzzing bees. The bees chase Grumpy Bear over the countryside until he dives into his cave promising to sleep, and sleep he does through fall and winter into spring. The story is told through simple dialogue and narrative with numerous repeated language patterns.
The story has a beginning, middle end text structure. All the sentences follow a similar pattern and are largely predictable. Quotation marks, exclamation marks, and commas are used. Bold face is used for emphasis. An artistic font is used to add meaning to words such as shiver and buzz. Capitals are used for Grumpy Bear’s name. Humorous illustrations support the text directly and add meaning.
The onomatopoetic words chirp, shiver, squeak, and buzz are used. The contractions can’t and don’t are used. Interest words include thumped, grumpy, shiver, stings, and noise.
